Commitment Information & MAS Credits
The standard weekly commitment to the conservatory is to teach three to four private lessons (1/2 hour each), or to assist with one to two classes or ensembles weekly for a 11-week term. By completing this term, you will earn 15 MAS credits for the semester.
Private lessons and group classes take place in the School of Music on Saturday mornings between 9am and noon for private lessons, or 9am and 1pm for group classes. If there is anything that would prohibit you from teaching during this time, please discuss it with the Conservatory prior to submitting your contract. If you would like to volunteer, but are unable to teach on Saturday mornings, there may be other ways to get involved! Please talk to us about how else we can put your talents to use.
When you submit your MAS credits for the semester (which is done through your APU Online account), please be sure to list Dr. Koops as your supervisor along with the email address [email protected] to ensure there are no delays in processing your credits.

Policies and Procedures
Lesson Schedule: The Conservatory will schedule all lessons and classes. Private lessons are scheduled between 9am and noon on Saturday mornings. Each instructor is responsible for teaching lessons at the assigned times. Instructors changing lesson schedules, except for make up lessons, will not be tolerated and may be subject to dismissal.
Make-Up Lessons: If you absolutely must miss a lesson, it is your responsibility to give as much advance notice to your student’s parents as possible, and to notify the Conservatory in advance of your absence via email. You are also required to make up that lesson at the soonest possible time convenient to you and the family, and the best time to schedule that is when you contact your students to notify them of your absence. Should one of your students give reasonable (24 hour) notice to you that they must be absent from a lesson, you must work with the family to make up the lesson. A student may give notice no more than twice in a semester. Missed lessons in excess of this are not required to be made up. Should a student give no notice of an absence, you are not required to make up the lesson.
First Communication: Prior to the first day of lessons each semester you will be provided with the names of your students and their parents, as well as their contact information. It is your responsibility to contact your students to introduce yourself and inform them of their assigned lesson time. It is a good idea to give each family your preferred contact information at this time so that they can reach you should a need arise. You should also let your students know where you will meet them on the first day of lessons to avoid any unnecessary confusion. If you are teaching a group class, you will have access to your roster, and should confirm with all of your students so that they do not forget about your class!
Practice Records: At the first lesson, instructors should give each student a practice record (supplied by the Conservatory) to complete at home each week in order to track the students practice time and assignments.

Recitals and Prerecitals: All Azusa Conservatory students are expected to perform each semester in the offered recitals. In order to perform, each student must pass a prerecital during the week indicated on our calendar. It is the instructor’s responsibility to prepare their students to pass their prerecital, as well as to accurately fill out the prerecital forms with all recital information for the semester. In order to pass their prerecital, students must be able to play or sing their piece with correct rhythm, intonation, articulation and expression as appropriate for their age and ability level. Students who fail two consecutive prerecitals may be subject to dismissal from the Conservatory. All program information for the recitals is due at the prerecital. Adjudication forms will be available for your review to ensure you are appropriately preparing your students.
Recital Attendance: The date of the semester recitals is listed here. All instructors are required to attend the recital in which their students perform, whether or not they are assisting with the performance. Please plan to be in attendance to support your students and congratulate them on a job well done! If there is a university event that makes your attendance impossible, please notify the Conservatory at your earliest awareness.
